License
Charter is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0. Use it commercially, modify it, ship it inside your own tools — just keep the notices.
Overview
The Apache License 2.0 is a permissive open-source license. It grants broad rights to use, modify, and redistribute the Software, includes an explicit patent grant, and asks little in return beyond preserving attribution. The summary below is a plain-English guide, not a substitute for the full text.

Grant of copyright & patent
Subject to the license terms, each contributor grants you a worldwide, royalty-free copyright license to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, publicly display, and distribute the Software. Each contributor also grants a patent license covering their contributions — and that grant terminates if you initiate patent litigation alleging the Software infringes.
Redistribution & NOTICE
If you redistribute Charter, in source or binary form, you must:
- give recipients a copy of the Apache-2.0 license;
- keep all copyright, patent, trademark, and attribution notices;
- include the contents of any
NOTICEfile in your distribution; - mark any files you changed as modified.
Trademarks
The license does not grant permission to use the Charter trade names, trademarks, service marks, or product names, except as required to describe the origin of the Software. The Charter name, wordmark, and logo remain marks of the project.
Disclaimer
